Piezoelectric ceramics are a kind of electronic ceramic material with piezoelectric properties. The main difference between them and typical piezoelectric quartz crystals which do not contain ferroelectric components is that the crystal phases of the main components are all grains with ferroelectric properties. Because ceramics are polycrystalline aggregates with randomly oriented grains, the spontaneous polarization vectors of each ferroelectric grain are also disorderly oriented.

In order to make the ceramics exhibit macroscopic piezoelectric properties, it is necessary to polarize the ceramics under a strong direct current field after the ceramics are fired and coated with a compound electrode at the end face so that the polarization vectors of the original disordered orientations can choose their preferred orientations along the electric field direction.
